Police have offered a R200 000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killers of a North West ANC official.

David Mosiane Chika, 33, the party's regional secretary in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, was shot at point-blank range in the driveway of his home in Alabama, Klerksdorp, last Friday.

He had stopped his vehicle at the gate at 1am and told his wife not to leave the house, because he had seen someone lurking outside. He then went to investigate.

Police said Chika's wife heard a gunshot followed by footsteps. Someone jumped the fence and ran to a car parked outside the yard.

She screamed for help and went to check on her husband.

Neighbours helped her take him to Klerksdorp Hospital, but he was certified dead shortly after his arrival.

Two days later, at the opening of the ANC conference in Mangaung, President Jacob Zuma spoke out against party political violence, in a clear reference to Chika's murder.

“What could be so much at stake that they would go so far to get their own way?” he asked.

In the week leading up to the conference, a disgruntled group of North West ANC members had failed in a court bid to alter the province's representation at Mangaung.

Hawks spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko said anyone with information may contact Colonel Clifford Kgorane on 082-4923-921, or Lieutenant-Colonel Rasekaka Makuoane on 071-4812-574. - Sapa
