Johannesburg - Former president Thabo Mbeki's mother told the SABC on Thursday she was anxiously waiting to hear how the ANC was going to celebrate her son.

“I don't know... what the ANC is going to say about him now,” Epainette Mbeki told the public broadcaster.

“They found fault with him, now I'm really surprised. I'm keen to know.”

Epainette, 96, was interviewed at her home in Ngcingwane village in Dutwya, Eastern Cape.

In 2008 Mbeki tendered his resignation following the African National Congress' decision to recall him.

This was after he was defeated by the current President Jacob Zuma at the party's elective conference in Polokwane.

On Friday, Zuma will deliver a lecture on Mbeki's leadership legacy in Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape.

This was part of the ANC's centenary celebrations. Each month was dedicated to a former president of the party. - Sapa
