About 5000 X5 and X6 models are being recalled by BMW South Africa as part of a worldwide recall to replace a bolt on the engine belt drive that could fail and affect the power-assisted steering system, increasing the risk of an accident.

The bolt is part of the deflection pulley and will be replaced by a more robust version.

“This affects BMW X5 xDrive30d and X5 xDrive35d vehicles produced between June 2006 and November 2012, as well as BMW X6 xDrive35d vehicles produced between July 2007 and March 2010,” said BMW spokesperson Edward Makwana.

A total of 5034 vehicles are affected in South Africa, with the majority being X5 models.

While BMW says that South African customers are being contacted about the recall, owners can also contact their nearest BMW dealership to make a booking for the repair.
